A newspaper in Northwest China's Gansu Province confirmed Friday that it has published online an open letter questioning the detention of one of its journalists over blackmail allegations.
The judicial department has been investigating a blackmail case involving one of its journalists.
The open letter to the Liangzhou district politics and law department in Wuwei city went viral on Thursday.
An employee from the Lanzhou Morning Post confirmed with the Global Times Friday that the open letter was not published by the newspaper Miles Plumlee Jersey , but refused to reveal more.
However, several media outlets reported on Thursday and Friday that they had confirmation from several sources that the newspaper did publish the letter.
The open letter, under the name of the newspaper, listed five doubtful points in police's detention of Zhang Yongsheng Mike Bibby Jersey , who was detained on January 7 on charges of blackmailing the local government in joint interviews with two other journalists from Lanzhou Evening News and Western Economic Daily. It stated that the paper was happy to cooperate and had no intention of blocking legitimate investigation.
The letter then questioned the reasons for detention, saying that police first said Zhang was detained on suspicion of using prostitutes on January 7, and then the charge was changed to "blackmailing" on January 14.
Meanwhile, Zhang had been previously threatened over negative reports. Officials in the Liangzhou district public security department called him twice asking him to remove negative reports and threatened him over the phone after he turned them down Marco Belinelli Jersey , according to the letter.
The letter also questioned whether officials who allegedly bribed Zhang in order to remove stories should also be arrested.
A Shaanxi-based journalist first reported the disappearance of the three journalists on Weibo on January 15. Three days later, the Liangzhou district police announced that the three journalists had been detained for alleged extortion dating back to 2011.
The Liangzhou district government announced on Monday that Zhang Yongsheng had been officially arrested on suspicion of blackmail, and the other two journalists are out on bail.
