www.newyorkgiantsteamonline.com , N.J. — The New York Giants completed their preseason on Thursday, losing to the New England Patriots 17-12.Giants’ starters on both offense and defense had the night off, leaving the game to second-team players and guys fighting for some of the final spots on the 53-man roster. NFL teams have to trim their rosters from the 90-man preseason limit to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET on Saturday.Kyle Lauletta, starting at quarterback with neither Eli Manning nor Davis Webb playing, completed 8-of-19 passes for 118 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. The touchdown pass was a 41-yard catch-and-run by wide receiver Amba Etta-Tawo. Lauletta played into the third quarter before giving way to Alex Tanney. Tanney completed 13-of-23 for 92 yards and one touchdown.Cornerback Donte Deayon, bidding for a roster spot, had a pair of first-half interceptions. Deayon was also credited with four passes defensed. Cornerback Chris Lewis-Harris, also bidding for a roster spot, had six first-half tackles and a pair of passes defensed. The outcome was sealed when New England quarterback Danny Etling ran 86 yards for a touchdown with 4:11 remaining New York Giants T-Shirt , making the score 17-6. That came one play after the Giants turned the ball over on downs at the Patriots 14-yard line.Moments that matteredNeither safety Curtis Riley nor cornerback B.W. Webb playing. The logical conclusion from that is that Riley has earned the free safety job and Webb is the slot corner.Gettleman visits broadcast booth: Giants general manager Dave Gettleman visited with Bob Papa ands Carl Banks in the Giants radio booth during the game. What he said really doesn’t matter. It was just, once again, nice to see the GM at the game as he continues his fight with lymphoma.Cornerback Donte Deayon likely firmed up his grasp on a 53-man roster spot with a pair of first-half interceptions of Danny Etling, one a diving effort that short-ciruited a New England scoring opportunity.Injury newsReserve offensive tackle Nick Becton left the game with an ankle injury. Becton has been bidding for a spot on the 53-man roster, and the severity of his injury will complicate the Giants’ decision-making on Saturday. What’s next? The regular season! Well, technically roster cuts first since teams have to reach the 53-man roster limit by 4 p.m. ET on Saturday. But, the next time the Giants play in a game it will for real. The Giants host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, Sept. 9 in the regular-season opener. Game time is 1 p.m.Giants injury news, 10/5: Olivier Vernon out again vs. Carolina For the second straight week optimism has turned to disappointment as the New York Giants on Friday ruled linebacker Olivier Vernon out for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers.Vernon [high ankle sprain] practiced on Wednesday and Thursday of last week before not practicing on Friday and being ruled out vs. the New Orleans Saints. The same scenario unfolded this week as he practiced for two days before not practicing Friday. Here is what Vernon had said Thursday about what he needed to do in order to play Sunday:“Prove to myself is the number one priority New York Giants Hats , but then also showing them [coaches] that I’m capable of making certain plays that you don’t want to be a liability out there,” Vernon said. “It’s just basically showing the coaches you’re capable of making the cuts when you have to or inside stunts and stuff like that.”Apparently, that did not happen. Vernon, who suffered the ankle sprain in practice during the preseason, has yet to play in a game this year.Tight end Evan Engram [MCL sprain} has also been ruled out, as expected.
