Patrick Peterson hasn't faced a starting quarterback in the preseasong himself in regular-season form anyway.Peterson returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown after Dallas decided to sit quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliott in what was supposed to be the dress rehearsal Dallas Cowboys Hoodie , and the Cardinals rolled to a 27-3 exhibition victory over the Cowboys on Sunday night. The Cardinals (3-0) forced eight turnovers to give them 16 takeaways in the preseason. That included two muffed punts by Dallas (0-3), the second recovered for a touchdown by Trent Sherfield to open the scoring in the first quarter.Prescott's absence made it three straight weeks that Arizona didn't face the opposing starter. San Diego's Philip Rivers skipped the opener, and Drew Brees sat for New Orleans last week."I definitely wish we would have seen some A-1 talent at the quarterback position," Peterson said. "But we still know if we play sound defense, that can happen to any of them."Sam Bradford led two largely ineffective series for the Cardinals after completing all seven of his passes in the first two preseason games. Playing without running back David Johnson and receiver Larry Fitzgerald, Bradford was 1 of 4 for 6 yards as Arizona generated just one first down.Josh Rosen, the 10th overall pick and likely backup to Bradford in the regular season, didn't play after injuring the thumb on his throwing (right) hand in practice last week. Mike Glennon directed a drive to Phil Dawson's 42-yard field goal in three second-quarter possessions, finishing 8 of 10 for 35 yards."We wanted to see a little bit more of Glennon but also didn't want to take a chance of re-injuring that thumb," coach Steve Wilks said. "We'll re-evaluate it this week and determine if we'll allow him to play in that last preseason game."The Cowboys were missing center Travis Frederick and right guard Zack Martin, part of the reason Prescott didn't play. The other reason was a longer-than-planned touchdown drive of 16 plays on Prescott's final possession of the second preseason game against Cincinnati.Owner Jerry Jones said last week he didn't need to see Elliott, the 2016 NFL rushing leader as a rookie, in a preseason game. It figures to be the first time in three seasons that Elliott, who is healthy, will miss the entire preseason since starters are generally expected to sit in the finales."We know we are trying to evaluate players out here," Jones said. "In general, our fans don't want us to run and take unnecessary risk. That's what you saw tonight. It was almost comical, relative to the turnover situation."EARLY CELEBRATIONPeterson stepped in front of Cooper Rush's pass to Tavon Austin along the sideline and held the ball in the air most of the way on the easy stroll to the end zone. Rush, who won the backup job as a rookie with a strong preseason last year, was 11 of 17 for 93 yards with two interceptions.Peterson also forced a fumble by toppling Rod Smith when the running back tried to hurdle him. Smith was originally ruled down, but replay showed the ball coming out before his arm hit the ground. The Cardinals intercepted three passes and recovered three fumbles, not counting the muffed punts.ANOTHER MILESTONEDallas defensive end Randy Gregory had another milestone in his return after missing last season on a substance-abuse suspension. Gregory Customized Dallas Cowboys Jerseys , who made his preseason debut last week, easily beat starting left tackle D.J. Humphries with a spin move to sack Bradford on Arizona's third offensive play.ANOTHER MISSING STARJohnson sitting likely signaled the end of his preseason at eight carries for 50 yards with a touchdown. Chase Edmonds had 55 yards on 11 carries. T.J. Logan, a fifth-round pick last year before spending the entire season on injured reserve, ran 59 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.MOMENT OF SILENCEA moment of silence was held before the national anthem for the late Sen. John McCain, with his hometown Cardinals on the sideline. Fitzgerald looked up to see the image of McCain on the huge video board hanging over the center of the field, and the crowd cheered afterward. McCain died Saturday.INJURIESCardinals: RB D.J. Foster, listed third in the depth chart, injured a knee during a touchback on a kickoff and didn't return.Cowboys: Already thin at safety, Dallas lost Kavon Frazier to a left shoulder injury in the first quarter. He was starting in place of Xavier Woods, who injured a hamstring last week against Cincinnati.NATIONAL ANTHEMThere were no apparent protests during the pregame playing of "The Star-Spangled Banner."UP NEXTPreseason finales for both teams Thursday night: Cowboys at Houston; Cardinals at home against Denver. Cam Newton is welcoming the idea of sharing the spotlight in Carolina.Newton has been the focal point of the Panthers' offense for the past seven seasons, but that's about to change — at least to some degree.Sure, Newton will still be running the show and remain a dual-threat QB, but coach Ron Rivera has made it clear Christian McCaffrey will play a much larger role this season, saying that it would be "ideal" to get the second-year running back 25 to 30 touches per game. That's a lot.McCaffrey averaged less than half that amount of touches as a rookie and still managed 1,086 yards from scrimmage and seven total touchdowns, so there's potential for him to have a big season. Most of McCaffrey's production came as a receiver in 2017, where he set a franchise rookie record with 80 receptions and five TD catches. But after releasing all-time leading rusher Jonathan Stewart, the Panthers are eager to feature McCaffrey more in the running game — similar to how new Panthers offensive coordinator Norv Turner used LaDainian Tomlinson in San Diego."I could see Christian, especially if he continues to develop the way we think he can, being a very integral part of what we want to do," Rivera said. And it's all part of the overall design to take some of the pressure off Newton, who led the team in rushing as well as passing last season. One of the reasons Turner was brought in was to find new and creative ways to get McCaffrey the ball Womens Taco Charlton Jersey , particularly in open space where he's difficult to tackle because of his speed and shiftiness.McCaffrey has been featured extensively in the preseason, touching the ball 10 times for 51 yards on Carolina's opening 16-play drive against the New England Patriots in the third preseason game. Here are some other things to know about the Panthers:CAM AND NORVAs for Newton, all eyes will be on how well he adapts to Turner's offense.Newton worked in a similar scheme with Turner understudy Rob Chudzinski early in his career, so there is some familiarity there. But while Newton said he's "extremely comfortable" with Turner, players say this system is more intricate than what former offensive coordinator Mike Shula ran.Under Turner, Newton will be asked to look past his first and second options more often and take what the defense gives him, relying heavily on McCaffrey and new speedy receivers Jarius Wright, Torrey Smith and rookie D.J. Moore to make plays."That has to be my mentality," Newton said. "We have a lot of guys who can take 2 yards and turn it into 20 yards, or more. But it starts with me and I have to trust those guys and get the ball to them."SPREADING IT AROUNDRivera also wants to see Newton get back to doing the things that earned him the league MVP honor in 2015 and helped the Panthers reach the Super Bowl — spreading the ball around to his several different receivers. He certainly has the options to do that with the additions at wide receiver and tight end Greg Olsen."Norv gets guys a lot of different guys in a lot of different places," Wright said. "There are some quick throws here and there and he basically gives the quarterback places to go with the ball."REPLACING DAVISIt is Shaq Thompson time in Carolina.Thompson has been groomed for the past three seasons to take over for Thomas Davis at weakside linebacker. With Davis suspended four games to open the season for testing positive for a banned substance, Thompson gets his shot."Thomas is the leader of our room, he's the leader of this team," middle linebacker Luke Kuechly said. "We are going to miss having him around. Shaq will do an excellent job, but when Thomas gets back, he's going to be hungry and he's going to be fresh."ACTION JACKSONThe Panthers will be counting on second-round pick Donte Jackson to step in and start right away at cornerback.Jackson is not big, but he was one of the fastest players in college football last season. He still struggles at times taking the correct angle on tackles, but the Panthers love his swagger and playmaking ability.O-LINE INJURIESThree starters on the offensive line went down with knee injuries during the preseason leaving the Panthers in a potentially precarious situation. Rivera said he's not sure if 2017 All-Pro second-team right tackle Daryl Williams, left tackle Matt Kalil or left guard Amini Silatolu will be back on the field for Carolina's Sept. 9 regular-season opener against Dallas.
