MILWAUKEE -- In less than a month, Mike Fiers has jumped from minor league starter to playoff-race stopper. Scooter Gennett drove in three runs and Fiers pitched into the seventh inning to lead Milwaukee past St. Louis 6-2 Friday night, snapping the Brewers nine-game losing streak and trimming the Cardinals lead in the NL Central to three games. Fiers (5-2) gave up two runs and seven hits in 6 2-3 innings, improving to 5-1 in six starts since being called up from Triple-A Nashville on Aug. 9 and giving him half of the Brewers 10 wins in 28 games since then. He struck out five and walked one. "Its big. We needed a win here pretty soon," said Fiers, who also helped himself with a pair of key sacrifice bunts. "I just wanted to give them a quality start, keep the runs as low as possible and give our team a chance to win. Its a big relief, but we have more work to do tomorrow. Jonathan Broxton, acquired Aug. 31 from Cincinnati, pitched a perfect eighth and Francisco Rodriguez got the last three outs after allowing consecutive singles to start the ninth. Milwaukee moved one game ahead of Atlanta for the NLs second wild-card spot. The Braves lost 11-3 at Miami. Cardinals starter John Lackey (2-2) gave up all six runs and nine hits in six innings as St. Louis snapped a six-game winning streak. "Kind of a weird one tonight," Lackey said. "Felt like I threw a lot better than the line score. I felt like I had good stuff. They got a couple big hits and then kind of had a little bad luck to start a couple of those innings. It happens." The Brewers took a 2-0 lead in the third on Gennetts two-run single. Milwaukee doubled the lead in the fifth on Gennetts RBI double and Jonathan Lucroys run-scoring single. "We havent really had that early lead in a while," Gennett said. "Especially against a team like this, you want to get ahead early. It was just nice to keep it and keep adding to it." The early runs marked the Brewers first two-run lead since Aug. 27 at San Diego when they blew a 2-0 lead in the ninth en route to a 3-2 loss in 10 innings. During the nine-game losing streak, Milwaukee scored two runs or fewer in eight of them. Jhonny Peralta snapped an 0-for-10 streak and cut the lead to 4-1 in the sixth with his 19th home run, but Khris Davis answered in the bottom of the inning with his team-best 22nd homer to make it 6-1. "You look at the two run homer, didnt see the pitch again but it looked like it caught a lot of the plate," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "But, if that doesnt happen we are in a 4-2 game and it would be a typical John Lackey start. The home run really kind of put it out of reach for him." St. Louis added a run in the seventh on a double by Peter Bourjos and a two-out pinch-hit infield single by Oscar Tavares that deflected off the glove of first baseman Lyle Overbay. Fiers has gone at least six innings in each of his six starts, returning to the form he showed in the first half of 2012 with Milwaukee. That season, he was 8-6 with a 2.89 ERA in his first 16 starts, but 1-4 with a 7.09 ERA in his final six starts. His struggles continued into 2013 where he was 1-4 with a 7.25 ERA in 11 games with the Brewers and was sent down twice. Fiers season ended in mid-June at Triple-A when he suffered a broken right forearm when he was hit by a line drive. Now, he is keeping the Brewers playoff hopes alive. "All those losses in a row, we didnt play well, but I think weve turned it around and are playing some good baseball right now," Fiers said. "Were hitting the ball, were pitching. Its only a matter of time before it turns around for us." REALLY SMALL BALL Brewers shortstop Jean Segura had three hits -- all infield singles. Its just, it seems like the spot we want him right now." Morrows final outing last season came on May 28. He was suffering from pain and stiffness in his right forearm. The diagnosis was an entrapped radial nerve. When rest and treatment didnt solve the problem, Morrow was shut down for the year in late July. Now, with just more than two weeks left until opening day, Morrows high count for the spring is 47 pitches. His last outing came last Tuesday, March 11, against the Baseball Canada junior team, during which he threw only fastballs and splitters. He has struggled to command his fastball, which the club and Morrow insist isnt worrisome due to his long layoff. "Were looking at the way guys are throwing and Brandon, right now, we want to make sure hes healthy, we want to make sure he gets through the season healthy," said Walker. "We need him to be a big part of this rotation and right now its just where he fits in." Morrow has been throwing relatively consistently since November. The Jays have brought him along carefully this spring but with the regular season looming, Morrow is running out of time to build up to go deeper into games. With too few innings to spread among all of their rotation hopefuls, the Jays are giving minor league games to rotation certainties like R.A. Dickey and Mark Buehrle. Morrow is included in that bunch. The plan is for Morrow to pitch four or five innings against the Yankees Scranton affiliate on Tuesday in Tampa. Tuesdays start will come a full week after Morrows last appearance. Walker says theres no concern about Morrows health. "No, no, but just past history we want to make sure we take care of him as best we can," he said. "Tuesday will be a good outing for him," continued Walker. "Hes going to get some good work on Tuesday and hell still have two outings after that." The Blue Jays have off days on three consecutive Mondays in April: April 7, 14 and 21. The club will require a fifth starter on four occasions during the first month of the season, although Walker and manager John Gibbons will be able to make adjustments as they see fit. "It depends on who youre playing, how you line up sometimes as you look at the first couple of weeks of the season," said Walker. "We can always slot him back in where we want to put him but, right now, this is how things look right now. Things could change." Meanwhile, Gibbons reiterated on Sunday morning that, in his mind, there is one spot open in the starting rotation. What isnt yet decided is whether there will be a seven reliever contingent or an eight-man bullpen heading north. An eight-man bullpen would shorten Gibbons bench but with much uncertainty about the group of starters, Gibbons wouldnt rule out taking an extra arm. There is also the business matter of options – who has them and who doesnt – to factor in. The Jays may have no choice but to put one of their pitchers through waivers but the club is loathe to lose the bodies. "What makes the team the strongest," said Gibbons. "Do we feel we need to carry that extra guy to help the rotation out? Because theyre all really good; I mean, were not going to keep a guy just to keep a guy unless theyre valuable and we think everybody we have is valuable." CAMP CUTS The Blue Jays optioned pitchers Kyle Drabek, Sean Nolin and Chad Jenkins to Triple-A Buffalo prior to Sundays 4-3, 10-inning win over the Orioles. Drabek, 26, struggled to command his repertoire this spring, giving up eight earned runs, 10 hits and six walks over eight innings. "Go down there and start pitching," said manager John Gibbons. "Were running out of time. Hes not going to make the team. He needs to go down there and get his work in." Jenkins, 26, allowed three runs over 6 2/3 spring innings, including one each in his final two appearances. He was a contributor as a call up last season, both as a starter and as a reliever, but he has options remaining. The Blue Jays can get Jenkins to Buffalo without first passing him through waivers. "He should be pitching in the big leagues," said Gibbons. "Theyre not far away. If somebody falters, if we keep somebody in the bullpen and they falter and we feel like they can help us more, theyll be right back up. Thats just the way the game works." Nolin, a 24-year-old lefthander, appeared in four spring games, starting one. He made his big league debut last May in a loss to Baltimore, was quickly demoted and not recalled the remainder of the season. Hes an option for the Blue Jays if the rotation suffers from underperformance or an injury.
