Dr. Anthony George Laing Ali Marpet Hat , Ghana’s pioneer on plastic surgery narrates his sad story of not receiving salary for eight months.
Retired plastic surgeon, Dr. Anthony George Laing recounts his ongoing unfortunate journey of chasing his salary for the past eight months. He attributes his current situation to unnecessary bureaucracy and long paperwork. Dr. Laing presently holds the position of Consultant and still operates at the Outpatients Department of the Plastic Surgery and Burns Center at Korle-Bu.
He personally and regularly visits the Ministry of Finance and the Accountant General’s Office for his salary. Although retired, he cannot stay away from his obligation due to his wide experience. On an interview with Stephen Anti, host of Express on the Personality show he poured out his disappointment over the matter.
He relates that he renewed his contract thrice after his retirement in order to continue giving life-saving services to Ghana. He admits that the show was not the proper place to vent out his frustration but he says he should say the truth about his discouraging position. He stresses that he can’t be bought and that the truth must be said about the matter that he has not been paid a single penny for his hard work.
When asked if he was rich, he did get a little exasperated. Although the doctor was into plastic surgery, he was not performing lucrative cosmetic surgery procedures like liposuction or facelift. He was into reconstructive surgery where he is focusing on life saving surgical procedures. He recounts how his day starts by attending to about 50 out patients in the morning, and emergency cases in between.
He also detailed on the show the various meticulous procedures he had to perform daily.
